SUMMARY:Uncovering the Complexities of Global Supply Chains Using Maritime Shipment and Firm Ownership Data
DESCRIPTION:11:30 - 12:30 // Global value chains (GVCs) underpin production and trade, with direct implications for both the real economy and the financial system. Yet, they remain poorly understood at the granular level. Project Insight attempted to address this gap by integrating detailed datasets on firm-to-firm activity to develop a proof of concept (POC) dashboard to enhance the monitoring of GVC developments. It is a joint project led by the BIS Innovation Hub's Hong Kong Centre, with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, DIW Berlin and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority as project partners. This seminar will provide an overview of the POC, along with research stemming from the project focused on multinational enterprises and intrafirm trade. Notably, this research combines maritime shipment data with parent-subsidiary linkages to examine the ownership perspective of cross-border shipments, what drives intrafirm trade and its potential macroeconomic implications.
